Several love stories 2 Beautiful Mature & milf women ...    As a medieval reenactor I was impressed with the level of research done for this book, from the terms of address used for various nobles to the different layers of armor and how it feels to wear them. I especially liked how it was specified that Riannon wore split hose, not joined—joined hose weren’t worn until after her type of armor went out of style.

While the romance was engaging (and hot, ngl), I felt that the worldbuilding could’ve used more thought. I know that in the real world, racism against vaguely Asian antagonists is a real thing, but since this is a fantasy world I think the antagonists probably should’ve been a little more ambiguously coded. The protagonists rush off into a holy war without a second thought to reclaim a sacred site from these “nonbelievers”, and even though yeah the Crusades were a thing that happened in the real world, I really wish the text had addressed the fact that this war, like the Crusades, was entirely pointless except as a vessel for spreading the protagonists’ religion in the most violent way possible. If the protagonists had considered for a second that the heathens’ religion was legitimate and therefore the war was unfounded, it would’ve added more depth to the characters ad the conflict. But they don’t, so it doesn’t.

Another thing along the same lines: as a transgender lesbian, I noticed that every time a character brought up that Riannon looked or acted like a man, they said something along the lines of “but it’s good she’s not denying she’s a woman, if she were pretending to be a man, that would be an abomination.” Again, I know that period-accurate transphobia Was A Thing, but in this instance, it’s impossible to see how much of this is the characters speaking or the author. It’s a fantasy world. Transphobia doesn’t have to exist.

Anyway, it was a fun read. I’m honestly surprised how few books out there feature wlw lady knights, this felt like it was catered to my own very specific tastes. I spent the whole first half texting my best friend in agony whenever the protags so much as looked at each other, it was great. 8/10, would read again.
